Mungo Training
How to survive in a life threatening situation

The Mungo (German word for Mongoose) gave the name to a unique training. Facing the deadly Cobra in a life threatening situation and with no natural immunity for protection, the Mongoose relies on speed, cunning and commitment to beat the odds. That’s exactly what we successfully teach our clients since 1996.

Does it only happen to others?

Watching TV productions like Crime Stop, XY-ungeloest, Medical Detectives or similar programs we learn about incidents that happened to others. Does this mean it can not happen to us? You walk into a bank and robbers appear just at that moment. You go to a theatre and rebels take you hostage. You spend your holiday on the island of your dreams, and then end up being abducted and taken hostage into a jungle. You sleep at night and all of a sudden you hear burglars breaking into your house. You are woman and walk home from work and get attacked by a rapist. You are sitting in a train and skinheads are entering your compartment and begin to terrorize the passengers. Be honest, you try to avoid thoughts like this, isn’t it? You, yourself know exactly what would happen to you. In a worse case scenario you will suffer or be plagued for the rest of your life from any of the above attacks. Nightmares will begin and the unencumbered times will be gone. You will be living but your life will be destroyed, because of an attack. You might not be able to work for a long period and your financial situation could turn into a disaster. Your might have to sell your house because you won’t be able to pay your instalments...

In the case of...

Most of the people are insured against fire, damage through water or wind, have breakage insurances and spend a lot of money to insure their lives while driving a car. We do all of this because we know that we or our families have to suffer the consequences, in case it really happens to us. Do you believe that more houses are burned, or that more water damage occurs than brutal crimes in your country? You pay money to get your TV back from your insurance if burglars come to your house. What are you doing against the physical and psychological damage for yourself if you are at home while the burglars are breaking in? What are you doing to prevent your wife or daughter from falling victim to being raped by the burglars? You hope it will never happen to you or your loved ones one day, isn’t it?

Learning from the victims

In 1996 we started a training program for private individuals in Johannesburg, South Africa. This place was chosen because Johannesburg became the crime capital of the world, due to the alarming statistics that a person was being murdered every 22 minutes. Every 5 minutes a robbery took place, and a burglary occurred every 90 seconds. The original program was based on experiences from Germany and Great Britain. The knowledge of Psychologists, Criminologists, Shooting Trainers, Close Combat Specialists and First Aid Teachers was the basis of these courses. But here in South Africa we got the input of the victims. Their stories and especially their behaviour, whether it was right or wrong, created the knowledge of the Mungo Training of today. People who had survived shoot outs, robberies, hijackings, hostage situations and rape gave us the possibility to compare the training program with the reality of crime. The input of our customers changed the program more than we would have ever believed. We constantly adjusted the theories that we taught to the real life experiences of our customers. After about 3 years we knew that we really could call our program “unique”. Which private company in the world had more incidents carefully analysed and integrated into their own training methods than Mungo Training Centre? Our training methods to avoid “Stockholm Syndrome” in the course of a hostage situation for example, had been praised by experts all over the country. Confronted with crime situations our customers learned to behave in a way that gave them a realistic chance to survive and stay unharmed. The feedback of the clients, who experienced crime situations after their training with us, proved that our training methods worked. “We would have been panic stricken and done everything wrong” an old lady told us, after she and her husband fell victim to an armed robbery. “Now we have lost our car and a video-machine, but nothing happened to us, and we are thankful for this. Things can be replaced by the insurance, but a life can’t.”

Suspicious new clients

Nothing amused us more than being watched critically by new customers. The first day of our courses became our “money back day”. People who had taken part the first day of our program could leave the course and immediately get their money back. We are proud to say that in all the years of our training this has never happened. They were suspicious because they couldn’t believe that they would be able learn to defend themselves physically and more importantly mentally. “I am not a Rambo” we sometimes heard in the beginning of a new course. “We don’t want to make you a Rambo” we still remark, “We want you to make use of our knowledge in a life critical situation, that’s more important than becoming a brawler.” Companies started to send a single employee to the training to find out what their employees could benefit from our courses. After a short time these companies started to send the whole management for training. Some companies started to give away courses as a benefit for good work to their staff members.

What is Mungo Training?

Our courses consist of:

1. Mungo Mugging
Mungo Mugging is a special defence training that allows a person to escape from a life threatening situation. The attacker will be severely hurt by a special fighting technique. Originally this training was given to women to defend themselves against rapists and is known in the US under the name Model Mugging. These techniques have been further developed and can be learned in about four 2 hour sessions. Hitting techniques are controlled by an electronic model that evaluates the intensity of each hit. Mungo Mugging training lessons have been given to the Special Task Force South Africa and the SEK Police Special Forces in Germany. The German Police Forces have not been allowed to make use of these techniques “as they could harm an attacker too much and leave him with irreparable damage”. Additional to this the students learn “gun-grab-techniques” which give them a chance to disarm an attacker if no better choice is left.

2. Shooting Training
As our instructors have been trained on SWAT Courses (Special Weapons and Tactics) we give effective defence training. The students get lessons with help the of the Police Combat Training System L-PCS. Training starts with a laser gun and then proceeds to live firing sessions. Two falling techniques are taught which enable the participant to escape the first shot from a short distance and grab his own gun while falling. Shooting in cat-stance, doing turns and stops, learning body search- and tying up techniques are also part of this field.

Shooting
Learning shooting in a proper position

3. House Security
The course participants are given basic lessons to avoid being taken hostage or robbed while entering, or being in the house. This includes technical and strategic precautions. The basic knowledge of alarm- and rescue possibilities during burglary and robbery are as well introduced to the students. You also learn how to include small children into a security plan without scaring them.

4. Survival Techniques
These are the most important lessons given to the course participants. We prepare them for worse case scenarios like hostage situations and how to avoid the “Stockholm Syndrome”, to survive armed robberies, carried out by newcomers and to “talk down” mentally ill persons in crime situations. The students also learn how to behave in a situation where the Police Force decides to end a crime situation forcefully (a raid). More people die due to the wrong behaviour in this situation, than being killed by the hostage takers.

5. Anti-Rape Techniques
If a girl or woman has been raped she will suffer for a long period. Statistics show that the attack in the start of the situation and the degradation while being raped are more incisive than the physical abuse itself. Often years of psychological help and a lot of understanding of the partner are necessary to come over this incident, if ever. We teach women how to avoid coming into a situation where “friends” misunderstand signals sent out by the woman and show them how to overcome their fear and try to escape from the situation. Tactical tricks and the combination with Mungo Mugging Techniques give them a realistic chance to withstand the attack.

6. First Aid
What do we really know about helping a pen who has been hurt during a car accident for example? It will be not too much. But compared to this what we know about wounds produced by a knife or a bullet it might be a lot. Often people unnecessarily die for no one knows what is really to do. We teach wound ballistics and show course participants what is possiblrsoe to do while the rescue team is on its way.

Who can attend a course?

Due to the nature of our courses we reserve the right to deny persons to take part on this, without the obligation to give any explanation for our decision.

The typical client is a business man and his family as well as members of the management who are sent by their company. Secretaries of board members and cockpit personnel are as well participants of these courses, for they have to deny access to their bosses and are mostly the first to look for help in case something unusual happened. Chauffeurs are as well attending Mungo Courses to get the knowledge how to avoid critical situations while driving their boss.

Which Courses are given?

Besides the full Mungo Course (4 days) we do courses without shooting training (3 days) and anti rape courses for women (4 days two hours) or one weekend. There are as well driving courses available, where we show drivers how to escape an attack by hostage takers and murder attacks.

Where are these courses given and in what language are they given?

Courses are given in English and German language. Full courses, including the shooting training, are only given in South Africa. All other courses are given in Germany and South Africa.

Where do I get information regarding costs, date of the next course etc.?
